Mark Barnes - Candidate for Newtown Llanllwchaiarn West

I am honoured to have been selected as your Welsh Conservative Council Candidate for the elections in May to succeed Cllr Peter Harris as County Councillor for the Ward of Newtown Llanllwchairan West. After nine years as our County Councillor, Peter has decided to retire and I would like to thank him for all his hard work in helping our community and solving our problems.

I live in the Ward with my family in Fairfield Drive where we have brought up our children and are proud residents of Newtown. We strongly embrace the Welsh heritage: my wife Nicola, is a maths teacher at Llanfair Caereinion High School and our 11 and 14-year-old children speak Welsh as their first language.

I own and run a national town and city centre regeneration company based in Newtown. This means I visit and discuss town centre and high street issues all around the UK. If elected, I hope to bring all this knowledge back to Newtown and use it to support our town centre.

I strongly believe that Newtown town centre has a successful future. However, our centres cannot succeed if they focus on retail alone: instead they should be a place for community with retailers benefiting as an important by-product.

If I am successful in being elected, I would like to work with you and other Newtown Councillors to make our town centre a thriving place where we, as a  community, can gather together and enjoy each other's company.

Twice a day I walk my dog from Llanfair Road along Milford Road to Dolerw Park and the rubbish and dog mess is unacceptable. I am very keen to hear your issues as well so that we can improve our community together. I look forward to meeting you soon.
